This photo of the country India colored red with a Communist insignia in the middle represents the presence of Communism throughout India, as seen throughout the novel. There are several instances where Valutha and Comrade Pillai’s positions in the Communist party are mentioned, especially in chapter four where the reader realizes that Comrade Pillai persuades his workers against Chacko and the factory and spreads the influence of Communist ideas. The picture of the Communist flag throughout India is important because Communism played a large role in the story by showing the characterization of Valutha as he struggled with it and the uprising and increasing power of Communism through Ayemenem, as seen in the Communist parade. The picture would particularly be seen in chapter two of the novel when, after the Sound of Music play, Rahel saw Velutha marching in the Communist parade, which altered her perspective towards him and caused confusion because it created a bad connotation with Velutha due to the lack of support for Communism

This has also caused her to completely forget about the house she lived in and she let it fall to pieces right around her. She sits around while watching TV and modeling Mammachi’s old jewelry. Rahel observes this as Baby Kochamma “living her life backwards.”
Estha had to lie to the police to save Ammu because he was given an ultimatum from Baby Kochamma. I chose this because it shows Estha's loss of innocence and the disfunction in the roles of families.
